Long ago, in the year 1070, there were no universities in Viet Nam. So, in 1076, Emperor Ly Nhan Tong decided to build one - the Imperial Academy. It is considered the first university in Viet Nam. The university was a great success and thousands of Vietnamese scholars graduated from this university.

The Imperial Academy has a long and interesting history. Many kings, emperors and scholars worked to develop the university. Chu Van An was regarded as one of the most famous teachers at the Imperial Academy.

In modern time, the Imperial Academy continues to grow and receive recognition. Many old buildings were reconstructed in 1999. In 2003, four statues (Ly Thanh Tong, Ly Nhan Tong, Le Thanh Tong, and Chu Van An) were built. In 2010, the 82 Doctors’ stone tablets were recognised by UNESCO.

1. Ly Thanh Tong (1023-1072)

This is the statue of Ly Thanh Tong. Emperor Ly Thanh Tong is considered the founder of the Temple of Literature. (Đây là tượng Lý Thánh Tông. Vua Lý Thánh Tông được xem là người thành lập Văn Miếu.)

2. Ly Nhan Tong (1066-1128)

This is the statue of Ly Nhan Tong. Emperor Ly Nhan Tong is regarded as the builder of the Imperial Academy. (Đây là tượng Lý Nhân Tông. Vua Lý Nhân Tông được xem như là người xây dựng nên Quốc Tử Giám.)

3. Le Thanh Tong (1442-1497)

This is the statue of Le Thanh Tong. The erection of the First Doctor’s stone tablet was ordered by King Le Thanh Tong. (Đây là tượng Lê Thánh Tông. Vua Lè Thánh Tông đã ra lệnh cho xây dựng bia Tiến sĩ đầu tiên.)

Thanks for your letter. It's very interesting to know about schools in the USA. I think schools in Viet Nam are a little different. Vietnamese students usually wear uniform. Classes start at 7.00 each morning and end at 11.15 in the afternoon. Students have a 30-minute break after three periods. At break time, many students play games. Some go to the canteen and buy something to eat or drink. Others talk together. Our school year lasts for 9 months, from September to May. Then we have a 3-month summer vacation. We feel too much long to come back to school to meet friends. I hope to know more about schools in your country.
